New Zealand's largest city by far, Auckland is a place to enjoy urban culture, with food, music and fashion to captivate your senses. It's a marine environment with idyllic islands that invite you to kick back and relax. It's also a geographical wonder, with 48 extinct volcanic cones and two ancient rainforested mountain ranges. There's huge scope for fun in every direction.

Things to do in Auckland

The natural assets of Auckland have made it a dream destination for all kinds of travellers, from doing-it-on-the-cheap backpackers to cost-is-no-issue super yacht owners. You'll find city-fringe suburbs bursting with great restaurants, attractive urban beaches for swimming and ferry escapes that will quickly land you on a picturesque gulf island.

There are all sorts of things to keep kids entertained too. Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World and Auckland Zoo are sure-fire hits, plus the city prides itself on being able to get you from snow to sand in the same day thanks to Snow Planet's indoor slopes.

Auckland is called the City of Sails for a reason; boating is big here, and there's plenty of scope for getting out on the water.

As the gateway to the winterless north, Auckland is almost tropical in the summer and comfortably mild in the colder seasons. The weather can change in a heartbeat, so if it's not quite your cup of tea, give it an hour.

It's worth remembering that Auckland is called the City of Sails for a reason; boating is big here, and there's plenty of scope for getting out on the water. From Viaduct Harbour you can get aboard a genuine America's cup yacht, go ocean jet boating, take a lunchtime harbour cruise or catch a fishing charter.

Auckland could just as easily be called the City of Volcanoes. There are more than 48 extinct volcanic cones and craters in the region. One of the biggest is Mount Eden, which is just four kilometres from the CBD. Hike to the top and you'll see many of the other volcanic cones dotted around the landscape. Auckland's volcanoes are a bit special, because they are monogenetic, meaning they erupt only once. The exception is Rangitoto, which erupted several times.
